The Problem with Blank Canvas

A while back I started to notice that procrastinating on a project often meant I was nervous. It was scary to see that blank canvas staring back at me. Breaking that mental stalemate was hard. But at the same time, it was actually easy: I’d just try to put something (anything!) down into that space.

  • To start an article, I might list random ideas, or maybe string together a few sentences, which I’d often later delete.
  • To start a concept for a design or an image, I’d just pull out a pencil and doodle.
  • If I were really stumped, I’d type random ideas into a photo site like Pinterest, just to see what the netizens had created.

But since 2023, there’s a whole new option created by the folks at OpenAI. You guessed it… I’m hopping on the artificial intelligence (AI) bandwagon. Contrary to what some have described, I’ve not figured out how to get fully formed content that is spot-on. However, by feeding ChatGPT, DALL-E, or another of the proliferating models a couple prompts, I can get SOMETHING. So the next time you need a place to start, give it a try. And let me know what you think.
